HSE stands for High School Equivalency which is the assessment given in Indiana for students to earn a high school credential. HSE tests can be taken only at official HSE testing centers. The HSE tests provide adults who did not complete a formal high school program the opportunity to certify their attainment of high school level academic knowledge and skills.

The Indiana HSE test may be administered only to individuals who meet the following minimum guidelines:
Does not hold a diploma from an accredited high school or its equivalent; and
Is a resident of the state of Indiana for a minimum of thirty (30) days immediately preceding the day of testing; and either has officially exited high school; or is at least eighteen (18) years of age;
If you are not 18 but at least 16 years of age, you may take the HSE exam ONLY if you have first obtained recommendation from a school superintendent. IMPORTANT: The individual providing the approval must be a Superintendent as defined by Indiana Code. Recommendations or exit forms signed by a principal, parent, assistant superintendent, or a superintendent’s designee will NOT be accepted as recommendation for taking the HSE exams.
At Impact Institute, the cost of the test is $115.00 The cost for re-testing is $23.00 per section.
Impact Institute requires all students to pre-register in person at 1607 Dowling Street, Kendallville, IN. Students need a current Indiana state issued ID, and payment for your test. The appropriate identification, includes either an Indiana driver’s license or another form of current government issued photo identification that includes your name, address, birth date, and signature. Please note, without an Indiana Driver’s License, you will be asked to show evidence of living in Indiana at least thirty (30) days prior to testing.
All accommodation requests must be done using http://www.tasctest.com approved form and submitted to Impact Institute at least 60 days before the scheduled test. If you have any questions regarding accommodations, please contact Impact Institute at 1-888-349-0250 ext. 4251.
Testers must complete the full battery of HSE tests within sixty (60) calendar days from the start of the first subtest.
To earn a passing score on the Indiana HSE test, a student must receive a scale score of 500 in each of the five (5) sections along with at least a 1 on their essay.
You may retake the section(s) you did not pass. Applicants may not retest in any subject until the full battery has been completed. Because there are three forms for the HSE test, candidates will be eligible to immediately re-test twice in a calendar year. While there is no official wait time required prior to retaking a test, additional time for further study and preparation is highly recommended.
An Indiana HSE candidate who has already earned a passing score on a subtest may only retest in that subject area if a higher score is needed to meet an admission requirement for postsecondary education or training, to meet employment requirements, or to enlist in the armed forces. The candidate must provide verification of this requirement from the entity requiring it.

Once you have taken the HSE test, you should register an account with Indiana’s official document fulfillment service, DiplomaSender: https://www.diplomasender.com If you pass the HSE test battery, your score report and diploma will be mailed to the address you indicated on your test registration materials. If you provided an invalid or incomplete address, you will need to login to DiplomaSender and order your credentials. If you do not pass the HSE test battery, then you can view your scores using Diplomasender or contact Impact Institute for an unofficial score report.
